What Can You Tell About This Gold: ebookDuring World War II Japanese soldiers captured all of the islands that now comprise the Philippines.  Throughout their occupation, Japanese soldiers stole a tremendous amount of gold from the Philipine government and its citizens.  Much of this gold was never recovered and treasure hunters are still searching for this lost treasure...

Chapter 1: “She repeated the scene of Lin hiding in the tree while the soldiers hid their gold a short distance away.  Next, Lin was leading someone to the beach, and then she wasn’t.  Then, Lin was digging out the gold at two places, but she couldn’t get herself to dig up the third place because she knew there was something there she didn’t want to see.

“In What Can You Tell About This Gold?, New World novelist Marina Rundell fuses separate worlds.  Paradise and war collide to create fertile ground for the pursuit of treasure.”

- Patty Williams, RDH

Chapter 2: “Balancing on a branch, peeking behind the trunk, she saw a soldier digging the ground with a shovel.  A rifle and a sack lay near him.  He opened the sack and inside it, was gold.  He stopped his urgent work and looked around him when he heard others approaching.

“During Japan’s World War II occupation of the Philippines, many stories began to circulate about soldiers hiding stolen gold because gold mines were prevalent in the region.  My mother still recalls the days when our entire family’s survival depended on hiding a small bit of rice from the Japanese soldiers.”

Chapter 3: “The invading soldiers thought they won and so began their plans to teach their culture.  The children were rounded up to be educated in the soldier’s native language.  Lin hid so she wouldn’t be forced to attend classes.  Her hiding place was a salamagi tree by the beach.”

What Can You Tell About This Gold? is excellent!  I couldn’t quit reading it.  What a great, original story.  You are to be commended and congratulated for such a great novel!”

About the Author:

Fortune hunters today are still working on excavating Japanese gold from the second world war in the area of the Philippines in which I grew up.  When I returned to the Philippines on vacation, the view of abandoned gold mines inspired my interest in writing this story.  A famous book written by George Clason, called The Richest Man in Babylon, gave me the idea for the book title. Swirling memories from my childhood in the Philippines before moving to the U.S. resulted in the culmination of this novel.
